Membership Checklist

As you may have picked up, joining the Madison Japanese Karate Club is more than just going to practice! You are joining a family that is excited to get to know you and support you along your martial arts journey and beyond!

Aaand, you are also joining a sports club within UW-Madison RecWell, which comes with its own set of paperwork! This checklist (which will be updated as needed) explains all the steps that you need to take to be a full-fledged MJKC member!

  1. Joining the Japanese Karate Club on IMLeaguesFollow the instructions here before your first practice with the club. Make sure that you fill out the Membership Consent and Supplementary Health Waiver form – this is one step beyond just accepting the “terms and conditions” when joining the club. (If you have trouble loading the link above in your browser, downloading it may help).

  2. Membership Fees. Our club charges membership fees, which cover administrative costs, traveling, event costs, AAKF membership, etc. Fees are $45/semester or $65/year (with summer practices always included). Returning members receive a $10 discount if paying for one semester only. You can pay your fees in cash, check, or Zelle from your bank account to mjkc-treasurer@aakfgreatlakes.com

  3. Safety and risk management training module. Typically, all club members are required to complete a short training module every year. Here is the link to take the 5-minute quiz for this year. Make sure you get all the questions right (as annoying as some may be due to the quiz structure...) and say that you are from the Japanese Karate Club at the end of the form.

  4. Sport Risk Concussion training (only once during your time here). All members of Sport Clubs are required to complete a slightly lengthier training module on concussion awareness and response. This only needs to be done ONCE during your time with the club, so only new members need to complete it. The module should take about 20 minutes to complete. After you are done, make sure to forward your confirmation email to one of the safety officers.

  5. Volunteering/Fundraising. To build rapport between club members and also help in the club’s success, we also ask that each member assists the club at least once a semester with fundraising or volunteer efforts. This typically involves events around campus like blood drives and races, or organizing our fall tournament, but you could also choose to a recurring volunteering effort with a fellow club member. We know that you are all very busy, so we are only asking for a small time commitment each semester. Club officers will reach out to you with opportunities!

  6. Social media. This is technically not a requirement, but you may want to be aware of all the different aspects of our club's social media presence! Our club has:
    • A website (https://mjkc.madcitykarate.com) containing lots of useful information about events, the history of the club, and belt exam requirements,
    • A public-facing Facebook page (https://fb.me/madisonjkc) and a newer, similar Instagram page (@madisonjkc)
    • A private Facebook group for club members and alumni (approval required) for more informal communication, and
    • A Discord server for club members and alumni, also for more informal communication. Please let an officer know if you want the invitation link to our Discord server!
    • This blog, which anyone is welcome to contribute to!

  7. Non-student members; if you are a member of the UW faculty or staff, the University requires that you purchase a RecWell membership before you can participate in a sports club in person. If you are unable to access the club on IMLeagues, please complete the required two consent forms using this Google form.
